I was invited to join the Indiana Wesleyan University's Nursing Advisory Board. I attend the inaugural meeting of the board today (February 1). Some items on the agenda were worth noting from the nurse practice in a rural Congo setting.
1. Global Health Ministry Program. IWU anticipates starting a program in Global Health Ministry. I believe such a program may help medical mission agencies.
2. IWU Nursing Programs in 10 years. A shortage of nurses and teachers may effect volunteers and mission nurses.
3. Tour of Nursing Training Center. Students practice with advanced simulation-dummies before going to hospital and clinics. Simulation-dummies can be programmed for different health senarios. The students view real monitors and equipment to evaluate the treatment of "the patient". Quickly, I thought about a video by Action Against Hungry. In the video, the agency was training perspective nurses. It was very funny when the perspective student was learning how to give a shot.
The training of a nurse in rural Congo is very different due to limited equipment and supplies.
