Congo became a Belgium Colony, on November 15, 1908, to stop the merciless slaughtering of millions of Congolese for ivory and rubber. Today (November 15, 2008), Congolese are being silently slaughtered by warring rebels groups for coltan, cobalt, tin, and diamonds.
Once upon a time, I said that "progress is a continuous circle". I was wrong. I realized later that "progress is a continuous upward spiral".
Ok, what is wrong here? We have not made any progress in Congo in a hundred years. Congo operates in the circle mood. They go from one killer to another killer. They are always the victim.
God Save Congo!
Can't let this centenary pass unnoticed: 100 years ago today, King Leopold II's "personal property" of the Etat Independant du Congo became a Belgian colony. This was the "Belgian Solution" that even human rights campaigners at the time saw as an improvement over the bloody personal rule by a sovereign who never set foot in his African domain, but who profited enormously from its rich natural resources.
