Actually, rural Congolese are not frequent alcohol drinkers on the average. I believe its availability and cost limit overall alcohol use.
Palm wine is like fine wine or champagne. It is only served on special occasions such as weddings, funerals, births, and the like. And yes, it is served when the Americans come to visit. Drinking palm wine with the locals, the "Bope's" is a true bonding experience.
